One thing has become abundantly clear. The leadership of the Massachusetts Legislature has no intention of allowing an audit of the legislative branch, even though nearly three-quarters of those who responded to a ballot question on the matter last November backed the audit.

State Auditor Diana DiZoglio, a Democrat, is at odds with her party in attempting to force Senate President Karen Spilka and House Speaker Ron Mariano to open the books for all to see.

Spilka and Mariano say it would be unconstitutional for DiZoglio to conduct a legislative audit. DiZoglio says there is a precedent. In the meantime, Spilka and Mariano continue to resist, but they've lawyered up in case the matter winds up in court.

Massachusetts state government consists almost entirely of Democrats, none of whom have been willing to stand with DiZoglio, though she has strong public support for her position.

DiZoglio submitted a ballot question last fall asking voters to determine whether "the State Auditor has the authority to audit the Legislature." A resounding 72 percent said "yes."

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell has resisted calls to force compliance with the audit in court, and Gov. Maura Healey has avoided the controversy almost entirely.

If DiZoglio is to be successful in forcing an audit, she will need the public's help.

To that end, DiZoglio will address the New Bedford Republican Committee at the Wamsutta Club at the James Arnold Mansion at 427 County Street on Wednesday, May 7 at 6 pm.

Supporters of the audit are encouraged to attend this meeting to show support for DiZoglio's efforts to force an audit of the Massachusetts State Legislature.
