Dealing With the Delta Variant in New Bedford [TOWNSQUARE SUNDAY]
Reports this past week of an outbreak of the Delta variant on Cape Cod have brought back some unpleasant memories of mask mandates and business lockdowns during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
In fact, health expects say lock downs, face coverings and social distancing could again be a part of our lives by the fall. Cheryl Bartlett, CEO of the New Bedford Community Health Center, said on this week's Townsquare Sunday that the variant appears even more contagious than the original virus. She believes the best way to stay safe is to get vaccinated against the virus.
The New Bedford Community Health Center is joining with other community organizations in bringing the vaccine into city neighborhoods, a program that has met with limited success. The vaccination rate in New Bedford is among the lowest in the state.
Bartlett talked about the Delta variant and the dangers it poses over the next few months. She also discussed why people are reluctant to get their shots, and why she believes the vaccines are very safe. Her interview can be heard here:
Townsquare Sunday is an hour-long public affairs program heard Sunday mornings at 6 and 11 a.m. on 1420 WBSM. The program highlights individuals and organizations working to make Greater New Bedford a better place to live and work.
