New Bedford Police Arrest Alleged Pickpocket and Release Video
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — The recent arrest of a suspected pickpocket has prompted New Bedford Police to release a video warning the public to be vigilant about their valuables this holiday season.
In a video posted to the New Bedford Police Facebook page, Assistant Deputy Chief Scott Carola discussed what people can do to protect themselves against pickpockets and other thieves as they are conducting their holiday shopping in the city.
On November 26, a 65-year-old New Bedford resident had an envelope containing $1,400 in cash stolen from his back pocket while at the checkout of a County Street convenience store.
Police said that the surveillance video, which is included in the department’s Facebook video, shows Daniel Raposo, 47, distracting the victim while allegedly stealing the envelope from the man’s pocket.
Police said Raposa was arrested and charged with larceny and with assault and battery on a person age 60 or older. They said that upon his arrest, officers discovered Raposa had allegedly already spent the stolen money.
“Anytime we arrest a suspect like this, it prevents another person from being victimized,” Carola said.
Police made the following suggestions in their video to prevent being a victim of theft:
- Always be aware of your surroundings
- Keep your valuables close
- Avoid displaying expensive items in public
- If carrying a purse or backpack, make sure it is securely fastened and within reach at all times
- Lock parked vehicles
- Consider using a cross-body bag or money belt
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash
“People that are out there robbing from others, out there stealing packages, they’re watching. What they don’t count on is you watching them,” Carola said. “So when you see something suspicious, it’s important that you trust your instincts and give us a call.”
