Back in August, I read a book called “Out of My Mind.” It follows the story of an 11 year-old with cerebral palsy. Melody can’t walk, talk, or write. With no way to communicate, there’s no way for anyone to know that she is actually quite brilliant, partially because she also has a photographic memory. All that changes when she gets a computerized communication device, and she finally finds her voice.

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this book. I laughed, I cried, and I honest to God sat there and thought about so many themes involved. I couldn’t stop talking about it.

Fast forward to the middle of December, and I stumble across an amazing video from Buzzfeed. This family from Needham, Massachusetts is working to give eight year old Maeve a voice of her own for the first time. A team at Vocal Id took it a step further by creating a voice that would sound just like her if she could speak by blending Maeve’s nine year old sister Erin’s voice with Maeve’s own vocalizations.

Yes, I teared up at my desk while watching it. All I could think about was how amazing it must feel for Maeve and Melody, and so many others like them to finally find their voice. Oh, and let's see if we can get Taylor Swift to see this and make her wish come true, ok?
