Mass. Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester says he's encouraged by what he saw Thursday in New Bedford's underperforming schools.

Chester visited both the Parker School and New Bedford High School.

Addressing the School Committee Thursday night, Chester said in both schools he saw serious learning taking place....

During his day long stay in the Whaling City, Chester also met with school administrators, students, and with the president of the New Bedford Educators Association, Lou St. John.

Chester said he'll also be seeking funding in the coming year for early education programs and money to help school districts like New Bedford to implement turnaround plans
