MIDDLEBORO (WBSM) — Middleboro firefighters successfully battled a garage fire this morning.

According to Fire Chief Owen Thompson, the department responded at about 11:35 a.m. to a report of a fire in a detached garage at 106 Oak Street. The owner of a nearby home saw smoke coming from the garage and called it in.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the four-bay garage with fire extending from the building’s roof, Thompson said. The building was unoccupied at the time.

Thompson said firefighters “aggressively attacked the fire to extinguish the flames and (remained) on the scene, conducting extensive overhauling.”

“The building, which features a towering chimney, was destroyed by the fire,” he said. “Although the chimney's stability was a safety concern, firefighters determined it was sturdy enough to continue safely battling the blaze.”

He said high winds at the time of the fire led to embers from the garage drifting and igniting several spots of grass and bushes that also had to be extinguished.

Thompson said the fire remains under investigation by the Middleboro Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office. The Lakeville and Raynham fire departments also provided mutual aid.
