New Bedford mayoral candidate Maria Giesta opened up her campaign headquarters at 290 Union St Saturday afternoon.

The former aid to former Congressman Barney Frank has not been shy when it comes to her views on public safety.

She has previously said that New Bedford's crime rates are unacceptably high and that she would fire Police Chief David Provencher if she were in office.

Giesta believes crime is still a major issue in the Whaling City that hasn't been addressed.

"If you don't believe me, believe your own eyes. People feel that crime has definetly not been abbated. This is still an issue and we need to do a better job making sure people feel safe in their neighborhood," said Giesta at her campaign headquarters.

She also wants to provide more funding for firefighters and station repairs and says those additional funds would come from streamlined city services.

As for the School Department, Giesta wants to see better treatment and support for teachers.

Giesta says she's been talking to former mayors and current city councilors to discuss her platform and why she's running.

So far, Giesta is the only candidate to announce a campaign. Election papers for mayoral, City Council, and School Committee positions will be available beginning May 22 at City Hall.
