Mayor Jon Mitchell isn't giving up on Symmetry Medical in the New Bedford Business Park.

Tecomet, the parent company of the medical device firm announced this week it would be shutting Symmetry Medical down over the next year, with layoffs beginning this summer.

The Mayor has sent a letter to Tecomet President William Dow, saying the city was surprised by the announcement of the plant closing.  The Mayor is asking for a meeting in New Bedford to explore every viable option to keep the facility open and retain the 190 jobs there.

In the letter Mitchell reminded the company that city government has strongly supported Symmetry in the past with a pair of tax incentive agreements and assistance in obtaining workforce training grants from the state.
