New Bdford's elected officials and the local sailing community are applauding the announcement that Buzzards Bay and New Bedford will host the Olympic sailing event, should Boston be awarded the 2024 Olympics.

Boston 2024 C-E-O Richard Davey said the selection of Buzzards Bay was a slam dunk, considering the sailing conditions are among the best in the nation.

As to whether public funding would be required for the event, Mayor Jon Mitchell says the city will offer in-kind services only, like it does for the Feast of The Blessed Sacrament or the New Bedford Half-Marathon.

"We're able to pull it off, we have the infrastructure to do it and I don't see any issue at all," said Mitchell.

The Mayor also pointed out no stadium was needed for Olympic sailing.  He pointed to Buzzards Bay and said, "the stadium is right there."
