Mayor Names Patricia Gomes Poet Laureate Of New Bedford

Award winning poet and author Patricia Gomes is the new poet laureate of New Bedford. The announcement was made Monday at the Renaissance Community School for The Arts.

Ms. Gomes' work has been published in the United States, United Kingdom, Austrailia, Canada and India, and she's serving her second term as president of Gallery X in New Bedford.

Gomes tells WBSM News, the post of poet laureate is a labor of love.....

MayorJon Mitchell says Gomes is already engaging the community with her poetry and is eager to help celebrate the city's beauty and diversity. The appointment is for three years and officially begins on May 1st.

A five member sub-committee of the New Bedford Cultural Council oversaw the selection process and recommended Gomes for the post.
