Longtime Democrat State Rep. Bill Straus will remain on Beacon Hill after defeating Republican challenger Dr. Jeffrey Swift in Tuesday's election.

Straus, of Mattapoisett, has been the representative for the 10th Bristol District since 1993. He serves as the Chair of the Transportation Joint Committee.

Swift, a Mattapoisett chiropractor, defeated Fairhaven's Robert McConnell in the primary for the chance to take on Straus.
