Massachusetts Gets All the Love From Mindy Kaling at Democratic National Convention
You could make a strong case for Kamala Harris being the star of the Democratic National Convention. After all, she accepted her party's nomination to run for President of the United States on August 22 in Chicago.
The other star was Massachusetts.
Governor Maura Healey and Senator Elizabeth Warren gave speeches backing Harris for the nation's top job during the convention's final night. One night earlier, so did Mindy Kaling, the Cambridge-born writer and actress who rose to fame on The Office and The Mindy Project.
Serving as celebrity host for Day 3 of the convention, Kaling glowed about her relationship with Harris, who served as her attorney general and senator in California before becoming Joe Biden's vice president. She called Harris a longtime friend, noting they bonded, in part, over their shared heritage. They are both daughters of Indian women who moved to America and chased their dreams.
Kaling, clearly excited to be on stage, seemed to speak from the heart. However, it's what she said about Massachusetts that grabbed the headlines:
Before she left the stage, Kaling shouted out the "amazing" delegation from Massachusetts, and sprinkled in some support for a fellow Bay State celebrity going through a much-publicized divorce from Jennifer Lopez.

"I love you, Massachusetts," she said as the crowd at Chicago United Center cheered. "Everyone is always hating on us but they just don't get it. Go, Sox! Go, Jayson Tatum! Ben Affleck, hang in there! Dunkin' Donuts is the best coffee in the world!"
If Kaling ever runs for office in Massachusetts, she has her stump speech ready.
The star's hometown love was cool, but let's not allow it to obscure another must-see Massachusetts moment from the convention.
Jack Schlossberg, the 31-year-old grandson of President John F. Kennedy, took to Instagram with Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey, somehow getting the 78-year-old legislator to say "Brat Summer."
These are strange times.
