Boston Named Finalist to Host 2028 Democratic Convention

The Democratic National Committee has narrowed its list of potential host cities for the party's 2028 nominating convention to five, and one of them is Boston. The other cities under consideration by the DNC are Denver, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Atlanta. The convention will be held from August 7-10, 2028.

According to Democrats.org, "DNC leadership and representatives of the party's Technical Advisory Group will visit each of these cities to assess the logistical and operational components of each city's bid." Those visits will occur this spring.

Boston Previously Hosted the Democratic Convention

If Boston is selected to host the convention, it would held at TD Garden, as it was in 2004, the last time the Democrats gathered in Boston to select a standard-bearer.

The 2004 Democratic National Convention nominated former Massachusetts U.S. Senator John Kerry, who would later serve as President Barack Obama's Secretary of State and special climate envoy to President Joe Biden.

The Historic 2004 Convention and Obama’s Breakout Speech

The 2004 Boston nominating convention is perhaps best remembered for the keynote address delivered by a little-known senator from Illinois, Barack Obama, who would be elected president four years later in 2008.

Boston competed against Baltimore, Detroit, Miami, and New York for the right to host the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter addressed the 2004 nominating convention, as did Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, Al Sharpton, and the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.
