This week we shined the Southcoast Health Community Spotlight on the Department of Children and Families. Foster parent recruiter Sonja Dubuisson joined us to talk about Foster Parent Appreciation Month, which takes place during the month of May.

It's a time to celebrate some of the most giving people in Massachusetts, our foster parents, who step into a child's life during a very vulnerable time.

Foster Parents Celebrated in May

Dubuisson explained why foster parents deserve recognition not only in May but year-round.

"There are circumstances where a child is removed from their biological parent, and that's a really scary time. That foster parent steps in and provides a safe and stable home for the child during a very traumatic period. They're offering a nurturing, secure place to stay while we work with the biological parent in hopes of reunification."

Qualities of a Great Foster Parent

"A lot of people assume they don’t qualify because they’re single. They automatically disqualify themselves," Dubuisson said. "But we’re looking for families who can provide a loving and safe environment. If you have the capacity to do that, you're already a good candidate."

How to Become a Foster Parent in Massachusetts

To start the process, go to Mass.gov/dcf and fill out an inquiry form. A recruiter will contact you to walk you through the step-by-step process. You’ll also attend a virtual information session, which is a great opportunity to get your questions answered.

Foster Parent Demand Remains High

"The need is great," Dubuisson said. "There are children from ages 0 to 18+ who need foster homes. We especially need homes for teens. It can be challenging—many families assume teenagers will be problematic—but teens also need a safe, nurturing space."

"We need families for all of our children," said Dubuisson. "But I hope people keep an open mind about teens. If you pass on a teen, you might miss the opportunity to meet an amazing person."
