Zeiterion Theatre Prepares for Long-Awaited Reopening With New Features

The long wait is almost over. After two years of renovation, the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center is preparing to reopen its doors on January 17, and the excitement is building across New Bedford. Blair Taylor, the Z’s Director of Education and Community, joined The MGM Show’s Southcoast Health Community Spotlight this week to share what audiences can expect when the curtain finally rises again.

Major Collaborative Kickoff Event

Taylor said the theater’s comeback celebration will be unlike anything the city has seen. For the first time, the Zeiterion is partnering directly with its two resident companies. The New Bedford Festival Theater and the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra will both be a part of the long awaited launch in a collaborative variety show.

“There’ll be ballroom dancing. There’ll be Broadway. There’ll be comedy,” Taylor said. “A little bit of everything that says welcome and welcome back.”

Arts Education Continued During Construction

While the building has been closed for major upgrades, the Zeiterion’s education department never stopped working. Taylor explained that keeping arts programming accessible during construction was a priority. “Exposure to the arts does wonderful things,” she said. “Sometimes people just need to know that it’s possible. I’m definitely a product of what access and resources can do.”

New Speakeasy Set to Surprise Visitors

As for what will surprise visitors most in January, Taylor didn’t hesitate. She can’t wait to see the public’s reaction to the brand new speakeasy. Hidden, atmospheric, and designed as an intimate after-show hangout, the space is already generating buzz.

“Everybody loves that nightcap vibe,” she said. “You’re not ready to go home, but you’re not looking for the main event either. The speakeasy is perfect for the next couple of hours.”

With construction nearly complete and excitement rising, the countdown to January 17 is officially on. The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center is ready to welcome the community back and begin a new chapter of arts, culture, and connection in downtown New Bedford.

New Bedford's Zeiterion: The Latest on the Renovations

On August 25, 2025, the media toured the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center to see the very latest on the historic theater's $37 million restoration project. This would be the last time anyone would publicly see the facility until the renovations are completed.
