Sunday’s Nicole Podkowa 5K Brings SouthCoast Together for Cancer Support
The Nicole Podkowa 5K Walk & Run was created by Nicole’s husband, Dr. John Podkowa, along with Southcoast Health’s Centers for Cancer Care, as a way to celebrate Nicole’s life while raising vital funds for cancer patients and their families.
Nicole's Legacy Inspires a Community Tradition
Nicole and John were lifelong runners, and during her cancer journey, Nicole found purpose in helping others going through similar battles. Today, that spirit lives on through the 5K, with proceeds benefiting the Patient Caregiver Assistance Fund at Southcoast Health.
How the 5K Helps SouthCoast Families
“These funds help families manage the hidden costs of cancer,” Dr. Podkowa explained. “From groceries and mortgage bills to counseling for children, wigs, or transportation, the fund provides wraparound services that support patients and their loved ones during treatment.”

The event has become a powerful community tradition, drawing more than 1,000 participants each year.
“When you see all those people standing together, you realize how small contributions add up to a tremendous impact,” Dr. Podkowa said. “It’s a true reminder of how much this community cares and shows up for one another.”
