Man in Custody After Barricading Himself in Fairhaven Home
FAIRHAVEN - A Fairhaven man is in custody after barricading himself in his home off of Sconticut Neck Road Sunday morning.
Fairhaven Police, along with a Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (SEMLEC) response team and police negotiators, were called to 18 Winsegansett Avenue at 8:28 a.m. after the 49-year-old man at that residence refused to cooperate with authorities during an undisclosed issue.
Neighbors on Winsegansett Avenue tell WBSM News that the man at that address has a history of mental illness.
After nearly three hours at the scene, the man was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for evaluation at around 12:30 p.m..
The incident was initially reported as a "reported hostage situation." Officials say the man was alone in the home, and did not pose a danger to himself or anyone else. However, he was possibly armed with a knife. Police say he did not have access to firearms.
No injuries were reported.
The man's identity is not being released, and there is no threat to the community.
