Macy's has made a decision about the future of its Dartmouth Mall location.

The iconic department store announced a major shift in strategy this week when it outlined plans for the next three years. The strategy, titled "A Bold New Chapter" by Macy's CEO Tony Spring, translates to the permanent closure of at least 150 Macy's locations across America. Not surprisingly, the locations on the target list were underperforming stores.

Understandably, an announcement like this can cause concern about how these closings might affect our local Macy's locations, particularly the Dartmouth Mall Macy's. Not only would a closure of the Dartmouth Macy's affect SouthCoast customers, as an anchor store, it would also cause a major disruption for the mall.

Most importantly, it would mean nearly 90 local people would be looking for a new job, which would be devastating.

Macy's has decided the fate of the Dartmouth Mall location.

The company reached out to Fun 107 Thursday morning with this official statement:

Our new strategy is designed to return Macy's Inc. to profitable growth and enhance the customer experience. We intend to close approximately 150 Macy's stores over the next three years. This allows us to focus our investments and resources on Macy's go-forward locations including full line, furniture, and current off-mall locations and Bloomie's, Bloomingdales The Outlet, and Bluemercury stores. We look forward to continuing to serve our customers at Macy's Dartmouth.

That's right. Macy's Dartmouth will remain open. It will not be included on the list of 150 doomed stores. That's incredible news for local shoppers.

It's uplifting to see the company make such a definitive announcement so publicly and so quickly after Tuesday's ominous news.

It speaks to the level of respect the staff in Dartmouth has earned.
