The longtime organizer of the South Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade is dead at the age of 85.

John "Wacko" Hurley passed away last night at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was being treated for an unspecified illness.

Hurley was the plaintiff in the 1995 case challenging gay advocacy groups seeking to march in the parade.

He explained at the time that organizers would not allow any marchers with a message not deemed to be family values.
