The local La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries in Dartmouth has made a significant donation to the nine apartments for veterans being built along Route 6 that will each be appointed with a new La-Z-Boy chair. In addition, the business donated $3,000 to the Veterans Transition House, a New Bedford-based organization that provides services to veterans.

The generous contributions were presented in a ceremony that marked the completion of renovations of the Faunce Corner Mall Road store, where La-Z-Boy has been located since 1994 when it moved from State Road. La-Z-Boy was renovated to better display its furniture offerings.

Peter Kavanaugh, president of the local company, and his sister and partner, Cathy Mayall, presented the donations before an audience of veterans, who cut the ribbon on the renovated store. Kavanaugh and Mayall are the third generations of Kavanaughs in the furniture business, following the footsteps of their grandfather who owned an Ethan Allen store in New Bedford. The family first opened a La-Z-Boy store in Dartmouth in 1978. La-Z-Boy was renovated to better display its furniture offerings.

The chairs will help furnish the O’Connor-Sisson Home on Rt. 6, which is being transformed into nine efficiency apartments for disabled veterans and veterans at risk of homelessness. The Partners in Housing project is expected to be completed in the fall.

Mike Gagne, who accepted the contribution on behalf of Partners in Housing, said the donation was one more example of the Kavanaugh family’s longtime commitment to supporting the betterment of Dartmouth.

The $3,000 will support the operating budget of the Veterans Transition House, which provides shelter, counseling, transportation and other services for homeless and at risk veterans. The organization will provide services to residents of the new housing complex who need them.
