Look around Acushnet and Freetown and you can’t help but notice the "NO LNG" signs dotting hundreds of front yards. Residents in neighboring towns, especially Acushnet, are amassing resistance to the proposal of 2 humongous tanks that could occupy an entire football field, saying the new plant is dangerous and in the wrong place near residences and schools. On the other hand, officials from the federal government and Eversource, contend the way they are built today, these tanks are safe.  LNG facilities are "almost overregulated,” Eversource spokesman Michael Durand told The Standard-Times. He and others contend that LNG is considerably safer to handle than gasoline or even propane, which are less strictly regulated.

The Eversource liquefied natural gas project, known as Spectra, will be discussed at the Century House during an “open house” on LNG, presented by the proponents,Tuesday, January 26 at 5:30 pm. The public is encouraged to attend the open house.
