Jack Rua Invitational Golf Tournament Returns to Support Camp for Kids with Diabetes

Golfers and local advocates are joining forces this month to honor the memory of a local businessman and support his passion for helping kids with diabetes.

The Jack Rua Invitational Golf Tournament is being held on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at the Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth. Proceeds from the event will benefit People Incorporated/The Diabetes Association and the Jack Rua Camp for Children with Diabetes.

Organizer Peter Daley visited Townsquare Sunday this week to get the word out about the golf tournament, and the Rua Camp for Children with Diabetes, also known as Camp Jack.

Honoring a Legacy of Community Leadership in Greater Fall River

Rua served as president of the Diabetes Association during the 1990s, and according to Daley, that was one of many titles he held during that time.

"He was super-involved in the community, family, and dozens of organizations in and around Greater Fall River. The Diabetes Association was one that was close to him," Daley said. "Jack Rua tragically passed away in a car crash in 2003, so the golf tournament that benefits the Diabetes Association and Camp Jack is in his name."

"All the money raised from the golf tournament goes directly to the Jack Rua Camp for Children with Diabetes," Daley said. "It's a six-week summer day camp in Assonet, specifically for children with Type 1 diabetes. It features a swimming pool, basketball courts, soccer fields, and a trained medical staff on hand every day."

Daley said the main goal of Camp Jack is inclusion, and campers are allowed to bring their siblings and their friends so they can be comfortable in managing their disease and in just being a kid.

"Over the past couple of years, the tournament has raised more than $70,000 for Camp Jack. It's really the main fundraiser for the camp," Daley said.
