New Bedford Immigrant Center Expands Outreach Efforts
The Immigrants Assistance Center on Crapo Street in New Bedford continues to serve all immigrants in a variety of ways, from helping them with basic needs to providing classes for those seeking to become citizens.
IAC: More Than 50 Years of Assisting New Bedford Immigrants
The IAC has operated for more than 50 years. President Helena DaSilva Hughes visited Townsquare Sunday to talk about the center's mission and an upcoming fundraiser to help pay for the important work it does.
"The IAC currently has 14,000 immigrants in its database, and that's not counting the increased amount of outreach we've been doing since this federal administration took office," Hughes said.

Workshops Focus on Family Preparedness
Hughes said her agency has taken part in 37 workshops around the city, with thousands of families participating. The workshops urge families to have a plan to keep their children safe, should their parents be detained by ICE.
"These families should be designating someone as a caregiver, and the caregiver should be a U.S. citizen," Hughes said. "This process is important because we've seen children being left with a neighbor or an uncle, and if they don't have any paperwork, it can lead to the Department of Children and Families getting involved. It's really all about protecting the children."
ICE Activity Still a Concern
ICE has been quiet in New Bedford for several weeks, but Hughes said agents are still here. "They are focusing on Third District Court, and also picking up people in surrounding towns, where they might not get as much attention," she said.
Annual Gala Supports Vital Programs
The Immigrants Assistance Center is funded primarily through donations from foundations, community organizations, private donations and state funding. According to Hughes, most of the center's programs are underfunded, and that's why it holds a gala celebration every year.
"Every cent raised from the gala goes specifically to programs at the IAC," Hughes said. She hopes to raise about $75,000 this year.
The Striving for Peace Gala happens on May 8 at the Century House in Acushnet. The event includes dinner, music, and a silent auction. Tickets are available on the Immigrants Assistance Center website or call (508) 996-8113 to make a donation.
