Gun Rights Activists Push Bill Aimed at “Gun-Free Zones”

BOSTON (AP) _ The Massachusetts affiliate of the National Rifle Association is pushing legislation on Beacon Hill to address what it sees as problems with ``gun free'' zones.

The legislation comes in the wake of the recent killings in Tennessee of four Marines, including a Massachusetts man, and a sailor.

The bill is being filed by the Gun Owners Action League and state Rep. John Velis, a Democrat from Westfield.

Supporters say the bill will create a commission to review policies regarding the dangers of ``gun free'' zones and make recommendations to increase the ability of citizens to defend themselves in these areas.

Gun Owners Action League Executive Director Jim Wallace said gun free zones have become targets for terrorists and murderers.

Critics argue that the way to curb gun violence is to have tougher gun laws.
