FREETOWN - A Freetown woman is dead following a one car crash Friday night off Richmond Road.

A press release says Freetown Police and Fire Department personnel responded to the crash scene just before 8pm. An investigation showed a Chevy Impala had traveled down an embankment and crashed into a tree. The driver was trapped inside and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the victim as 36 year old Jennifer Bartlett of Freetown..

Police arrested 47 year old Edward Benfeito of Freetown at the scene. He claimed he was a friend of Bartlett and was following her car moments before the crash. He was found crouching near the wreck, attempting to make contact with her.

Benfeito has been charged with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation and speeding. He'll be arraigned Tuesday in Fall River.

The crash remains under investigation by Freetown Police and a State Police accident reconstruction team.
