Fishing Summit Reviews Science And Safety Issues

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell was among those attending a summit meeting Monday in Boston on ways to sustain Massachusetts fisheries.

Step one says Mitchell is having the Federal Government improve its science. Mitchell says better science should lead to fairer regulations for fishermen.

Officials from the UMass Dartmouth School of Marine Science and Technology, or SMAST, made a presentation Monday, showing underwater video taken last year, showing much more fish in areas of the North Atlantic, than the scientists expected.

Mass. Congressman Bill Keating was the Summit's Keynote Speaker, updating programs that would make grant money available for safety training for fishermen.
