FALL RIVER (WBSM) — A Fall River man has been sentenced to 50 years to life for killing two people and injuring a third in a shooting incident in that city in 2021.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III said Thursday that Jeremy Holmes, 23, was sentenced to serve two consecutive sentences of 25 years to life for each of two counts of first degree murder. He also received a concurrent sentence of four to five years for a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm. Holmes was previously convicted after a jury trial in November 2024.

Holmes will be eligible for parole because he was 18 years old at the time of the double murders. According to the D.A.’s Office, a January 2024 court decision declared that those “who are convicted of first degree murder and under the age of 21 at the time the murder is committed must be sentenced with parole eligibility.”

The 2021 Shooting in Corky Row

On May 18, 2021 at about 4:22 p.m., Fall River Police responded to 911 calls reporting shots in the area of Fifth Street and Branch Street near Griffin Park in the Corky Row neighborhood. People at the scene directed police to Jovaughn Mills, 29, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to St. Anne’s Hospital and pronounced deceased a short time later.

Miguel Sanjurjo, 14, was also found with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital and pronounced deceased a short time later.

The third victim was an adult male who suffered a gunshot wound to his calf. He invoked his Fifth Amendment right and did not testify.

Identifying the Shooter: Witnesses and Video Evidence

Holmes was identified as the shooter through witness statements and surveillance video, which showed him walk into Griffin Park with a gun and fire multiple rounds in the direction of the victims.

D.A. Quinn's Statement

"I commend the court for giving the defendant consecutive life sentences for each murder. The defendant fired multiple rounds in broad daylight into a park crowded with a number of people including women and children. He killed two individuals and wounded a third,” Quinn said. “Just because you are under the age of 21 does not mean you should not be held fully accountable for premeditated murder and the potential for additional deaths or serious injury for the outrageous and lawless conduct of the defendant.”
