Massachusetts Man Sentenced Up to 40 Years for Child Rape

FALL RIVER (WBSM) — A man who previously lived in Attleboro has been sentenced to up to 40 years in prison for repeatedly raping a five-year-old family member.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced that William Machado, 35, was found guilty in Fall River Superior Court in February of two counts of aggravated rape of a child by five-year age difference, two counts of rape of a child by force, assault to rape a child, indecent assault and battery on a person under 14, lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 16, open and gross lewdness, and attempting to commit a crime (drugging for sexual intercourse).

Machado was sentenced on March 13 to a state prison sentence of 35 to 40 years, followed by 10 years of supervised probation.

Charges Detail the Sexual Abuse

Quinn said that in 2021, Machado moved to Massachusetts from another state and resided with family members, including the five-year-old female victim, for several months. In January of 2022, the victim’s mother went to check on her in the middle of the night and found her bedroom door closed. She opened it to find Machado inside the room, adjusting his clothing. He said the girl’s TV was too loud, and that’s why he entered her room. The mother also noted a strong odor of nail polish remover.

The mother approached the girl and found her asleep in bed, but she had an adult-sized surgical mask on her chest dampened with a substance that smelled like nail polish remover. She also knocked over a storage container at the foot of the bed that had a liquid in it that also smelled like nail polish remover. Neither the bottle, the mask, nor the odor had been in the child’s bedroom prior to Machado entering the room.

The mother yelled at Machado that he needed to leave. She took her daughter out of the room and into her own bedroom, and Machado gathered his belongings, including the mask and the bottle of suspected nail polish remover, and left. He never returned to the residence.

Victim’s Testimony Key to Conviction

In August and September of 2022, police and investigators spoke with the child based on statements she made to her parents. She said Machado had exposed his genitals to her on more than one occasion, had touched her vaginal area, and raped her by performing oral sex and by using an object. She said she asked him to stop, but he kept going.

District Attorney Calls Crimes "Depraved"

“The defendant repeatedly raped and molested a five-year-old family member simply because he had access to her,” D.A. Quinn said. “He engaged in depraved and disordered conduct that warranted a very lengthy sentence. I commend the victim for her courage in persevering through this extremely difficult ordeal.”
