A couple of weeks ago, a bizarre little mystery popped up in Fall River when a woman was caught on camera walking out of St. James Irish Pub with one of the pub’s beloved gnomes.

The pub posted the footage online, asking for the return of its tiny mascot and social media had a field day with it, but unfortunately, the gnome never made its way home.

Enter Fall River City Councilor and Public Safety Chairman Christopher Peckham.

Peckham saw the story circulating online and decided he could help bring a little luck back to the pub.

A Lucky Replacement

Peckham, who happens to be an antiques collector, was sitting at home when something on his shelf caught his eye: a 1974 Hoffman Distilling Company decanter called “Mrs. Lucky.”

The piece isn’t just a decorative decanter. It’s also a music box, and it features a leprechaun theme that was just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

“I saw the article about the gnome and I had that Irish decanter from 1974,” Peckham said. “Billy and Matt are good friends of mine and businesses in that neighborhood stick together. It doesn’t matter if it’s something small like a gnome, you just don’t steal.”

A Happy Ending at the Pub

Peckham texted co-owner Billy Farrer to let him know he had a little gift for the bar and stopped by the next day to drop it off.

Matt Medley, the other St. James' co-owner, wasn’t there at the time, but Farrer was behind the bar and greeted the surprise with a big smile.

So while the original gnome may still be out there somewhere, St. James Irish Pub now has a new lucky charm.

Not a bad ending for one of the strangest little thefts to come out of Fall River.
