Fairhaven Police Pup 'Blue' Scores Narcotics Certification

Congratulations to Fairhaven's newest K-9 unit officer, Blue. The 12-month-old pup got sent to the head of the class this week after going after the United States Police Canine Association Narcotics Certification test. He succeeded on his first try.

Blue was already certified to be a K-9 officer when we went through the police academy and passed; this represents an additional certification that not many dogs achieve, especially on their first try.

"Normally, a dog will need more time in the field before they're ready to pass this test," Captain Mike Botelho said. "We've been noticing his work ethic and how well he's been doing, so we decided to have him give it a shot."

Blue and his handler Officer Jillian Jodoin received a national certification rating of excellence in narcotics detection. The tandem has officially exceeded the state standard for police working dogs and handlers.

"He was a rock star. He passed with flying colors. The instructors there were all very impressed," Botelho said.

The next step for Blue will be to get certified in tracking missing people. The Fairhaven PD is also working towards making Blue the state's first multipurpose narcotics detection dog and comfort dog. He will never be used as an aggressive police dog.

Blue lives with Officer Jodoin and her two dogs.

"He's definitely goofy and everything, but when he's in work mode he is all business," Botelho said.
