Fairhaven Boy’s Generosity Brings Joy to Young Patients at Mass General Children’s PICU

In the heart of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Mass General Children’s Hospital, where young patients fight some of their toughest battles, joy has emerged thanks to the generosity of one remarkable boy: Owen Costa.

Owen, a 19-year-old former PICU patient from Fairhaven, knows firsthand the challenges faced by children in this critical care unit.

Costa is battling Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and for him, gaming was more than just a pastime during his stay – it was a lifeline. Yet he quickly realized that the unit’s lone, outdated Xbox system was far from a reliable escape.

Determined to make a difference, Owen set out on a mission to bring joy, comfort and connection to the very place that helped him heal.

From Patient to Philanthropist

Motivated by his own experience, Owen took action. With the help of Owen’s Buddies, a dedicated network of family, friends and supporters, he donated two Xbox carts and two Nintendo Switch systems, each customized with a special logo that reflects his journey.

These gifts represent more than just entertainment; they are a testament to Owen’s resilience and his desire to uplift others.

The Power of Play

For children in the PICU, gaming offers more than a distraction; it provides an emotional escape, fosters creativity, and builds connections in a place where the days can feel long and isolating.

The ability to immerse themselves in a game, even for a short time, helps these young patients experience a sense of normalcy amid the beeping monitors and medical routines.

“Owen’s gift has transformed the atmosphere,” shared a PICU nurse. “The kids now have something to look forward to, and seeing their smiles makes a world of difference.”
