After 65 Years, Fairhaven Landscaper G. Bourne Knowles Is Closing
FAIRHAVEN (WBSM) — G. Bourne Knowles & Co., the Fairhaven-based landscaper that has beautified the SouthCoast for the past 65 years, is closing down permanently.
A 65-Year SouthCoast Legacy
The company made the announcement on Facebook on Monday, stating it would be closing its doors at the end of December and thanking its customers for decades of support. The post was in the form of a letter signed by Bourne Knowles.
“We cannot fully express our deep gratitude for your business and support. Working with you has been an honor and a pleasure,” Knowles’ letter read. “While this journey was always rewarding and, at times, challenging, now is the time for me to step away.”
“While this has been a difficult decision for me, I’m excited to spend more time on our farm and with my growing family,” he wrote.

From Tree Service to Garden Center
According to the company website, G. Bourne Knowles & Co. began in 1961 in South Dartmouth as a tree and landscape service with two crews and three trucks. The company then moved to 42 acres on Route 6 in Fairhaven in 1968, and in 1973, it opened up a retail garden center, floral shop and wholesale nursery.
“For the next 18 years, we provided these services to our loyal customers, but with increased competition from the big box stores, we made the difficult decision to phase out all but the trees and landscape divisions.”
