The public is invited to an Open House Sunday at the Fairhaven Fire Department on Washington Street.

Firefighter Wayne Oliveira, the department's Public Information Officer, says the Open House is part of a celebration of National Fire Prevention Week. This year's theme is "Every second counts: Plan two ways out."

"We're trying to make people understand that every second is critical when you are trying to escape a fire because a fire will double in intensity for every minute its allowed to burn. Its also important to identify two ways out in case your primary exit is blocked," said Oliveira.

Sunday's Open House will include tours of fire apparatus, lessons on planning escape routes, how to use a fire extinguisher, and an extrication demo.

Sunday's Open House runs from one to 3pm and refreshments will be available.
