NEW BEDFORD — A small exterior fire at a residence located at 380 North Front Street has been extinguished.

The call came in about about 12:30 p.m., New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News.

"We have a fire that was discovered in the roof structure of the porch on the exterior of the structure, and at this point it appears it might have been from carelessly discarded smoking materials, but we're still investigating," Chief Gomes said.

No injuries were reported, and Chief Gomes said the damage was limited.

"We were able to get to the fire pretty rapidly and keep it to the point of origin, so we don't anticipate the building not being habitable going forward," he said. "Luckily, the damage was pretty much sustained only in the roof structure on the second floor."
