You get a terrific price on one of those 'cheaper' airlines but after they loose your luggage on a flight that lasted much longer than posted, you ask yourself if that bargain was worth it. However, newly proposed Department of Transportation rules will purge low-cost and larger airlines with a poor record to disclose their problems before you purchase a ticket with them.

For its size, Spirit Airlines generates the most complaints each year for substandard service followed closely by Frontier Airlines, United Airlines and American Airlines. The newly proposed DOT rules should act to improve service.

If you'd like to comment on the proposal and offer some constructive criticism, you may leave your comments on the Department of Transportation's website, www.dot.gov. Sometimes, buying cheaper tickets can cost you money in other ways. Remember time is money!
