One of our favorite holidays is right around the corner. Thanksgiving is on the way! Family, football and food (not necessarily in that order).

Thanksgiving, however, is a time when too many people here on the SouthCoast go without a proper Thanksgiving meal. It's just another Thursday living with food insecurity.

For decades, Fun 107, WBSM and the United Way of Greater New Bedford have teamed up to help collect food for local SouthCoast families in need.

Our Hunger Heroes Food Drop will take place on Saturday, November 16 in the parking lot of the Dartmouth Mall Aldi. Our goal is to collect enough food to assemble one thousand Thanksgiving meals at the UWGNB's Hunger Heroes event on November 23.

Here are the things we'll need to get it done:

Acceptable Itemsnon-perishables and canned goods including:

  • Canned Vegetables
  • Boxed Cornbread Mix
  • Canned Cranberry Sauce
  • Gravy Packets
  • Instant Mashed Potatoes
  • Boxed Stuffing

Need to pick up some food to donate during our Hunger Heroes Food Drop? No problem. Aldi will be putting together some end caps filled with items on our wish list. They'll be easy to grab, go and donate.

You can also make a monetary donation so that members of United Way can purchase any missing items ahead of the big packaging day. You can donate online through the United Way's website.

If you belong to a school or local organization that would like to get involved, we'd love to hear from you. Your collection can help jump-start our food drive and make collection day a huge success. Please contact Victoria Grasela, the Vice President of Marketing & Community Engagement at United Way of Greater New Bedford via email at vgrasela@unitedwayofgnb.org.
