Major League Baseball is suspending Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz one game for making contact with an umpire.  He's also been fined an undisclosed amount.

The incident took place Sunday against the Orioles when Ortiz argued a checked swing call by third base umpire Jerry Meals.  "Big Papi" dropped his bat and threw his arms in the air in protest.  Home plate umpire John Tumpane intervened and ejected Ortiz, who then made contact with Tumpane.

Ortiz is appealing the suspension and will be eligible to play in the interim.  The Red Sox are in St. Petersburg for a series against the Rays. {Metro Networks Inc.}
