
Dartmouth Teen Charged in New Bedford Hit-and-Run Death
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A 16-year-old from Dartmouth has been charged in the hit-and-run death of Nicolasa Ventura Colaj in New Bedford in the early moments of New Year’s Day.
Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced today that the juvenile has been charged with negligent motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene resulting in death. New Bedford Police said the teen is also being charged with two violations related to operating with a junior operator’s license.
The juvenile’s name was not released, and they are expected to be arraigned in New Bedford Juvenile Court on Monday, January 5.

Colaj, 33, was leaving the Iglesia Pentecostal Unida Latinoamericana Church on Acushnet Avenue with her family just after midnight on January 1 when she was struck and killed by an SUV that then fled from the scene.
On Thursday, investigators were able to identify, locate and seize the vehicle that was involved in the crash.

Police Chief, Mayor Issue Statements
“This was a thorough and relentless investigation carried out under extremely difficult circumstances,” New Bedford Police Chief Jason Thody said. “I want to first thank the emergency personnel who responded immediately and provided lifesaving measures, and I appreciate the public’s patience and support throughout this process."
"I also want to commend the detectives, officers, and support staff of the NBPD for their dedication and professionalism," Thody said. "While nothing can undo this tragic loss, we are committed to seeing this investigation through and ensuring Nicolasa’s family sees accountability and justice.”
“In the wake of this indescribable tragedy, I am grateful for the skillful and urgent investigative work of the NBPD, and the important assistance of the State Police and DA Quinn’s Office,” New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell said. “I hope their pursuit of justice will bring some measure of consolation to Nicolasa’s family and friends.”
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The investigation remains ongoing and is being conducted by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office along with New Bedford Police.
