The City of New Bedford and the New Bedford Women's Center marked the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, by lighting a tree outside City Hall, honoring victims of domestic violence.

Also speaking at the ceremony was Mayor Jon Mitchell, Police Chief David Provencher, and City Council President Bruce Duarte.

The tree's purple lights will shine throughout the month of October to raise awareness about domestic violence.

The Women's Center is also organizing a "Silent March" through Downtown New Bedford on October 29th, followed by an ecumenical service at the First Unitarian Church  on Union Street.
