Its a rite of summer in New Bedford...the annual Cape Verdean Recognition Day Parade, celebrating the independence of the Cape Verde Islands, and the contributions of Cape Verdean Americans to New Bedford.

This year's parade on Saturday featured lots of music, dancers, several floats and veterans groups.

Patrick Hunt and his wife were watching the parade holding their one-month old grand-daughter. They were enjoying the show.  "We enjoy the culture in the city. We're involved with WHALE, the Port Society, and the Whaling Museum, so we love New Bedford, said Hunt."

Kelly Vertentas of New Bedford was taking in the parade for the first time. "I think it has a lot of different cultures, and music and love. Everyone is happy."

Also among the marchers were Mayor Jon Mitchell, members of the City Council and new Police Chief Joseph Cordeiro.
