Twenty one years ago less than two dozen people showed up to the first Swim Buzzards Bay event.

This Saturday, over 250 participants swam 1.2 miles across outer New Bedford Harbor to raise money and awareness to protect Buzzards Bay.

The swim is hosted by the Buzzards Bay Coalition and president Mark Rasmussen says he loves what he's seen over the years...

This year's event has raised over $140,000 for the nonprofit.

Swimmers dove into the harbor by the former Davy's Locker location and crossed the finish line at Fort Phoenix. At the finish line was a celebration with food and music.

The event concluded with an award ceremony for some of the fastest swim times and biggest fund raisers.
