The Town of Brookline, Massachusetts, is handing out free money. The $750 monthly handouts are free to the 55 recipients, or members, enrolled in Brookline's Up Together program; however, the program is funded with taxpayer money, so someone is ultimately paying for it.

According to Fox News, Brookline "began sending payments through a guaranteed income program – triple the amount offered under a previous version."

What Is Brookline's Up Together Program?

"The Brookline Housing Authority (BHA) and Brookline Community Foundation (BCF) announced Up Together Brookline in October, following an earlier program that offered $250 monthly checks to low-income residents under the 'Resident Opportunity Initiative," according to Fox.

How Much Guaranteed Income Do Residents Get?

Recipients will receive a total of $9,000 in guaranteed income payments over the 12-month pilot program. The program uses American Rescue Plan Act funds ($460,000) and a grant from the Brookline Community Foundation ($76,000).

What Can the Money Be Used For?

The Up Together website says recipients "use the money first and foremost on basic needs like groceries, housing, and utility bills. Some members use the money to build their businesses, pay for college courses, boost their savings, or for fun and exciting activities with their children."

"Other members use the money to give back to their communities," according to the site.

So that I understand correctly, is the Town of Brookline giving taxpayer money to residents for college courses, to increase their bank balances, and for "fun and exciting" activities?

The Up Together website says, "Because each person's situation is different, providing cash investments without restrictions allows them to use the money in the manner that is best for them."

Does that include liquor stores, pot shops, casinos, and prostitutes? With no restrictions or accountability, who would ever know?
