The Brockton Fair ran for 145 seasons, from 1874 through 2019 – but now, for the third straight year, the fair has been canceled.

There was no Brockton Fair in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions on such events. The fair recently posted on its website that there would be no 2022 event either, but offered no explanation as to why.

“It is with sadness, we announce the cancellation of the 2022 Brockton Fair,” was all that was posted to the site.

It’s the exact same wording that was used in 2020 and 2021.

Requests for comment from Brockton Fair staff have gone unanswered as of this writing.

That means for the third consecutive year, there will be no midway, no rides, no games, no animal exhibits, no demolition derby and no fireworks coming to the fairgrounds.

The Brockton Fair usually starts in late June and is a signature event for the area, and even had its legendary gravelly-voiced “Soak the Bloke” clown – the great Kenny Dickman – featured in the short documentary film Dunk Tank Clowns.

The Brockton Fair is the only one of the “Big Three” for this area of Massachusetts that won’t be back for 2022 (and the only one that missed 2021 as well).

The Barnstable County Fair, which has been in operation since 1844, is scheduled to take place July 18-24 at the fairgrounds in East Falmouth.

The Marshfield Fair, which began in 1867, is scheduled to take place August 19-28. That fair did miss time in the past, in 1917 and 1918 and then again from 1942-1945 as well as in 2020, according to Wikipedia.

In addition, The Big E will also take place September 16-October 2 up in Springfield, and on September 23 will feature a performance from this year’s headliner, Grammy-winning rapper Nelly.
