BOURNE (WBSM) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced this morning that repair work is now complete on the Bourne Bridge, more than two weeks ahead of schedule.

Bridge traffic had been undergoing significant delays in the past few months as critical repairs were made to the structural integrity of the bridge.

According to a release, the contractor completed the waterproofing and paving portion of Phase 3 of the project late Thursday night and removed the lane restrictions.

Other repairs made in Phase 3 included repairs to the sidewalk, as well as structural and roadwork repairs to the travel lanes adjacent to the sidewalk.

Contractors applied temporary line striping on the bridge travel lanes to finish the cleanup, and are expected to come back Sunday night to complete permanent line striping and remove all temporary road signage.

The Commonwealth is still hoping to eventually replace the aging Sagamore and Bourne Bridges, a project that is expected to cost around $4.5 billion.
