TAUNTON - One person is dead following an overnight fire in Taunton.

The Taunton Fire Department says at approximately 11 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters were called to a three-family home at 246 Washington Street for a report of heavy smoke and flames pouring from the top floor of the triple-decker. Four Taunton Fire engines and a ladder truck responded to the scene to quickly knock the fire down.

As firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, they discovered an adult body in the home. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity is being withheld until next of kin are notified. The State Medical Examiner's Office has taken custody of the body to officially determine identity and exact cause of death.

No other injuries were reported.

Eight residents of the home escaped the flames safely, but have all been displaced due to the extensive damage caused by the fire. The Red Cross and the Taunton Emergency Management Agency are assisting them in relocation efforts.

Officials believe the fire started on the third floor, but the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
