The Biggest Reason Why Massachusetts is the 2nd Loudest State in the Entire U.S.
If you would have asked me about the loudest states in the U.S., I never would have picked Massachusetts coming in at number 2, however, once I heard the reasons why, it makes total sense, especially because of this "big" one.
The article in Newsweek says that each state in the country was assigned a noise score based on transportation, commuter traffic and nightlife.
Logan Airport
The noise level for each state took into account how many flights were flying overhead. Big planes are not exactly quiet. That makes total sense for Boston. Anyone who has ever flown out of Logan Airport has seen that one minute, you are in a residential area trying to get through the traffic of the tunnels to the airport, the next, you are on a plane with a nice beverage in your hand, disturbing all those sleeping people below.
Airplanes upped Massachusetts noise score, but that's not the biggest reason, IMHO.

Boston Has a Lot of Passengers Crammed into the T
Another factor in determining noise level was public transit density. It is so convenient to take the T into Boston, but boy, sometimes you have to get really familiar with the person next to you. So close that you can literally smell their deodorant or worse, lack thereof. Yes, the trains can get extremely crowded. Where there are people, there is noise, so, that upped Massachusetts score, but nope, not the biggest reason.
Number of Building Construction Permits
Okay, this factor, I'm certain, is the biggest reason why Massachusetts has the 2nd largest noise score in the Country. Anyone who has gone into Boston for the past 20, 30 years or so, knows that construction never stops. Boston had this little thing called "the big dig," that was a nightmare for commuters and tax payers alike.
Construction in Boston was bad, but it got really bad after Mayor Menino died. I don't know why, exactly. Maybe it was because he was trying to keep Boston "small-ish" as far as big cities go?
It's a wonder we didn't beat New Jersey because of all the construction. That's the state took the number one spot.
