Original story from January 24, 2025:
FALL RIVER (WBSM) — A Guatemalan man was convicted Thursday for a rape that occurred over 30 years ago in Attleboro.
Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced that Eduardo Mendez, 51, was convicted on January 23 of aggravated rape after a jury trial in Fall River Superior Court.
The conviction dates back to the June 9, 1994 rape of a 36-year-old woman who was walking home in Attleboro when she was approached from behind by a group of men. They dragged her into a nearby hallway, where she was then raped by Mendez.
After the men fled the area, the victim’s screams were heard by a 14-year-old who then brought her to the Attleboro police station. She was then taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital, where an evidence collection kit was used, but sat untested for a number of years.
The kit was finally sent to the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab in 2019 for testing, and male DNA sperm cells were detected, which were eventually connected to Mendez.
Mendez will be sentenced on January 27, 2025.
