Cleveland's move to buy 1,500 police body cameras and data storage could cost up to $3.3 million over five years, a higher price tag than previously known and an illustration of the long-term costs of such programs.

The city's contract with Taser International is among the largest municipal orders of body cameras to date. It envisions the city spending a half-million dollars or more per year in storage, maintenance and replacement costs once the program is fully operational.

The contract was released Wednesday after an open records request from The Associated Press. City officials had budgeted $2.4 million over three years.

Departments across the country are facing pressure to deploy body cameras to improve policing, but some are struggling to pay for them and the years of storage.
