New Bedford will be one of six locations around the country where the Drug Enforcement Administration plans to establish new law enforcement teams to stem the flow of heroin and illicit fentanyl.

In a statement released Friday, the D-E-A says the teams will be made up of special Federal agents, and state and local task force officers.

Acting Administrator Robert Patterson says "at a time when overdose deaths are at catastrophic levels, the investigative teams are a way to address the opioid epidemic, and pursue the criminal organizations that distribute their poision to our neighborhoods."

Besides New Bedford, teams will be located in Charleston, West Virginia, Cincinnatti and Cleveland Ohio, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Long Island, New York.
