American Sniper Trial Verdict

Ex-Marine Eddie Ray Routh has been found guilty of murder in the "American Sniper" trial. Routh admitted to shooting Chris Kyle and his friend, Chad Littlefield on February 2nd, 2013. However, he pleaded NOT GUILTY due to the psychotic episodes he suffers from with PTSD. Prosecutors said Tuesday that whatever episodes he suffered are self-induced through alcohol and marijuana abuse.

Prosecutors claimed it was "just cold, calculated capital murder." Defense attorneys contend that he "had a delusion. He thought that they were going to kill him."

The Texas jury deliberated for less than two hours before coming forward with their verdict. State District Judge Jason Cashon sentenced Routh to life in prison without possibility of parole. Prosecutors had not sought the death penalty in the case. Routh's defense team said they would appeal the conviction.

Kyle's widow, Taya, was not in the courtroom when the verdict came. She stormed out in the middle of the defense's closing arguments earlier in the day. She was heard whispering an expletive and slamming her hand on the wall as she walked out the door. At the time, attorneys were discussing how useful it would have been for Routh's mother to have told Chris Kyle about her son's history of violence.

Routh showed no visible emotion as the verdict was read. Kyle's brother and parents were among a group of victims' families and friends who cried and held hands. They did not issue a statement.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott tweeted "JUSTICE!" in response to the verdict.
